The Pineapple
The exotic Pineapple has served as a symbol of hospitality for centuries. During the colonial era, sailing ships returning home from tropical ports would often bring back pineapples as a curiosity. Captains began placing these pineapples on their front porches or gateposts to let friends and neighbors know they had returned home and were prepared to entertain guests with the produce and stories of far off lands. The pineapple quickly came to symbolize the finest in hospitality and can now be found in carvings and sculpture through much of the United States.
